Ms. Voletta Wallace Remembers Her Son

There’s a well known proverb that says behind every good man is a good woman. Well in this case Ms. Voletta Wallace has proven this theory to be valid. Ms. Wallace is breaking through and introducing herself to the world in the shadow of her late son, Christopher Wallace aka the Notorious B.I.G.
Almost nine years after losing her son, Ms. Wallace is ready to make her presence felt in the world. Through her novel she is inviting the public to share in the memories of some of the most personal times in her life. She also discloses how she was able to reconcile and cope with losing her child. In this exclusive interview with Vibe.com, Voletta Wallace shares her thoughts on reclaiming her identity, her relationships with her son’s former cronies Sean “Diddy” Combs, Lil’ Kim and Lil’ Cease, the forthcoming Biggie Duets album and her inner feelings about the injustices surrounding her son’s murder.
Vibe.com: Tell me about your book? Why did you feel it was necessary for you to tell your story?
Ms. Voletta Wallace: My book, it’s really a book about me. I say me because the world never knew anything about me; they have misconception about Biggie’s mother. So I think it was about time for me to tell them about Voletta Wallace. When my son passed away I lost my identity, I was no longer Ms. Wallace—I became Biggie’s mother. When I walk in a room, people don’t know who I am if I say Ms. Wallace—but if I say Biggie’s mother they know. I have a name, my name is Voletta Wallace. My book is about Voletta Wallace remembering her son, Christopher Wallace, not the Notorious B.I.G. the entertainer.
You talk about your relationships with Sean “Diddy” Combs, Lil’ Kim and Lil’ Cease in your book. What are the thoughts on these individuals now?
.W: As far as my relationship with Puffy then, I never had one ‘cause I never knew him. After my son passed away I’ve gotten to know him. He’s a person that is challenging, but likeable. He’s a businessman that’s not easy, but we get along and we get our work done. As far as Lil’ Cease is concerned he was my son’s protégé. I did him a favor and according to him, he wasn’t aware of what was done. But he apologized after. As far as Lil’ Kim is concerned, she has her beautiful alter ego and otherwise. What they did to me was wrong, but I’m not going to delve into the past or live in the past. I want to wish them the best and hope to God that in the future they will do a lot of growing up and get on with their lives.
I have heard rumors that you have plans on writing another book, a sequel—what would that book be about or focus on?
V.W: The [re]trial is coming up and hopefully the sequel will be about Notorious B.I.G. and his death.
What are your reactions to the comments and/or the mimicking that were made on the Hot 97 morning show?
V.W: Well whatever they said, it’s their energy not mine. I told Cease to mind his damn business, I meant it then and if he gets into my business now I will tell him again to mind his own goddamn business. As far as them mimicking me, I’m glad they have somebody to mimic. I wish that they would mimic themselves, because many of those people that they are mimicking might get them into trouble.
As far as the Notorious B.I.G. Duets album, are you pleased with the final product?
V.W: I’m very pleased with the album. The artists on it came on with enthusiasm and energy and a lot of love for my son. The work that they put came from their heart. It was good and clean—there is profanity on it, but they came with a clean heart, they wanted to do it.
Do you have control over your son’s estate?
V.W: Yes. Not Voletta Wallace 100%, but the family does, yes.
As far as the wrongful death lawsuit against the LAPD, do you think that if the case does go back to court for a re-trial that the outcome will be in your favor?
V.W: With the information that the judge ordered the LAPD to produce to our attorneys, hopefully we are going to take that information and finish our trial because it was declared a mistrial. I don’t know if I’ll find peace knowing that my son was murdered, thinking of how he was murdered. But at least I’ll get some constellation knowing that the people who did it are behind bars being punished for it.
You said that you haven’t found inner peace yet regarding your son’s death. Do you think you ever will?
V.W: No, but I have [found] some kind of peace. Whenever I’m down or perplexed I have my faith, my family, and my very good friends that I turn to. So whenever I find myself into a negative corner, I have those branches to turn to. Hopefully in the future when the murderer is exposed and when the truth comes out, maybe I will find inner peace.
