Prodigy evokes Notorious BIG elements on to his new HNIC 3 album

When Prodigy dropped H.N.I.C. 3 last week, the Mobb Deep lyricist didn't set out to do the same old thing. He purposely planned to make his latest Head N---a in Charge LP stand out from the other two in the trilogy. "The first H.N.I.C. album was real street, gutter. It was almost like a Mobb Deep feel," Prodigy said on Wednesday's "RapFix Live" of the first installment of the franchise, which dropped in 2000. "The second one was more of a revolutionary, rebel-type thing."

With his latest album, Prodigy hopes to capture a different audience but still approaches his music with that familiar Mobb Deep grit. "I decided to create female songs, but hard-core female songs," he said. "It's not like it's some lite-FM records where we're trying to get radio spins. Most of the female songs on this album, they're not gonna play on the radio. It's a little bit too hard-core."

On "Pretty Thug," a track Prodigy says was inspired by the late great Notorious B.I.G.'s 1994 album (Ready To Die) cut "Me and My Bitch," the well-respected spitter paints pictures of a Mickey and Mallory "Natural Born Killers" type relationship — hardly the stuff pop-radio love ballads are made of.

It's not surprising, especially since Prodigy wrote the album while he was serving a three-year prison sentence on gun charges. "To me, that was like the most focused I've ever been in my life because there is nothing else really to do," he said. "You got all the time in the world to sit there and concentrate and really plan and strategize, so that's what I did."
