Record Store Day 2013 is fast approaching — the annual vinyl celebration is scheduled for April 20, 2013 — and event organizers have just dropped the full list of exclusive releases hitting shelves next month. Here are some of the Record Store Day 2013 release rosters.
Some of the mouth-watering items: Gza, Liquid Swords Chess Box vinyl box set, Donny Hathaway, "Never My Love"/"Memories of Love", Bobby Rush, Southern King of Blues Funk 12-inch vinyl and CD," Sly & The Family Stone, "I Want to Take You Higher" 10-inch vinyl, Jimi Hendrix, "Hey Joe"/"Stone Free" 7-inch vinyl and a 12-inch vinyl reissue of the late great Notorious B.I.G.'s landmark Ready to Die.
The original "Ready To Die" 1995 2-lp vinyl edition featuring all tracks and interludes including on 1994 cd/cassette edition PLUS bonus track "Who Shot ya?".
During the Reagan era of "all-for-me" economics, MCs like Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap painted pictures of silky rap gangsterism, inspired by movies like The Mack and Superfly. Out of the post-Reagan rubble came Notorious B.I.G.'s debut, the "Hustler" reality-trip Ready to Die. Biggie still rhymes about the gold, the Moet, and the ladies, but also reveals the casualties on the road from struggler to hustler to player. "Juicy" sets up Biggie's rags-to-riches story, but then the curtain gets pulled back, with unapologetic, hardcore tracks like "Gimme the Loot" and "Machine Gun Funk." It's a funky album (just try not throwing your hands in the air when you hear "Big Poppa"), and it's a powerful album--possibly even the Mayflower of 1990s East Coast "Hustler" rap. |
