  • J. Cole Brought Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize” Back To Los Angeles

Thanks to J. Cole, The late great Notorious B.I.G. was going going, back back, to Cali Cali yet again on Saturday (Feb. 20). Hitting the main stage as the headliner for Shaun White’s Air + Style Festival in Los Angeles, Cole paid tribute to the legendary Brooklyn rapper after his signature call-and-response portion of the show for “Who Dat.” Pinning one side of the audience against the other for his 2010 track, the set took the perfect transition into Biggie’s “Hypnotize.”

Getting a quick two-step in, Cole spit the classic rap track as seemingly an ode to B.I.G., who shot the video for “Hypnotize” in Los Angeles in 1997 just a month before his death. The performance of the track brought the East Coast to the West Coast yet again, shedding a light on Biggie’s legacy and rising above his tragedy-stricken beef against Tupac Shakur. The crowd continued its turn-up during the nod to hip-hop history as well.

The Air + Style Festival also featured performances from A$AP Ferg, Migos, Action Bronson, Danny Brown, Flatbush Zombies and Big Grams. Watch J. Cole perform his mash-up of “Who Dat” and “Hypnotize” below:

With music festival season underway, J. Cole performed at the Shaun White's "Air + Style" event in Los Angeles over the weekend in front of a raucous crowd. While Cole ran through his many hits, he mixed things up a bit when he transitioned from his banger "Who Dat" to Notorious B.I.G.'s classic track, "Hypnotize." Of course, Cole completely slayed this portion of the performance, as he mirrored Biggie's infamous flow on the track while not missing any of the lyrics to prove that he's really all about his hip-hop history. It will be interesting to see if Cole keeps this ode to Biggie as a part of his set going forward, especially since he's slated to perform at a few more festivals this year, including a headlining set at Bonnaroo in June. Whether he does or not, it's incredibly cool to see Cole pull something like this off and the crowd to react like it did.
