Voletta Wallace Knows Suge Knight, Puffy ‘Had Some Responsibility’ in the Notorious B.I.G.’s Murder

The March 1997 murder of Christopher “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace remains an unresolved wound in hip-hop’s collective consciousness, but it’s a deeper and more profound pain that his mother, Voletta Wallace, has had to endure over the last 19 years since her son was shot and killed in Los Angeles. Over the years, Ms. Wallace has been less public in her recognitions and celebrations of her son than Afeni Shakur, mother of the also-slaim Tupac Shakur; but Voletta has been as devoted to finding out what happened on that night and what led to it.

In a recent interview, retired LAPD detective Greg Kading says that he told Ms. Wallace that he believes Suge Knight to be directly responsible in retaliation for violence that he also claims Sean “Puffy” Combs set in motion.

During an interview with “Murder Master Music Show,” Kading says that he went to Wallace’s house just before the 2011 release of Murder Rap: The Untold Story of the Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur Murder Investigations, his book detailing his investigation into the two rap stars’ deaths.

In Murder Rap, Kading concludes that Puffy hired a Crips gang member named Duane Keith “Keffe D” Davis to kill Shakur and Knight for a bounty of $1 million; the actual shooting was carried out by Keffe D’s nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996. Shakur died September 13. And Kading alleges that Suge hired a Bloods gang member to kill Biggie as an act of retaliation; and that the gunman was Wardell “Poochie” Fouse. Biggie was killed on March 9, 1997.

“I sat down with her and explained to her what we had discovered in the police investigation,” Kading says. “We sat there and it was a very emotional encounter, because she was, I think, understanding clearly what had happened, and I think she was starting to see that other people were responsible than who she had previously believed based on the Russell Poole nonsense.”

Kading dismissed the case’s official investigating detective, Russell Poole; stating that Poole’s findings on the case were “inaccurate” and “nonsense,” and he shared his own findings with Voletta Wallace. “I think she knows that all of these guys…Puffy and Suge, all had some responsibility in the murder of her son.”
