    Rev. Ovester Armstrong Jr.

    Who is he? Ovester, 31, is the founder of Key Enterprise, a nonprofit organization that promotes secondary education and ongoing education among minority youth. Ovester comes from a long line of preachers and other clergy members and is the associate minister and youth minister for Macedonia Baptist Church in Rockford. He is a volunteer chaplain at Rockford Memorial Hospital, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, and is a Mason. He serves on the fund-raising board for the local chapter of the March of Dimes. He works as a case manager and community advocate for Shelter Care Ministries and is part of the ministry advisory board of CeaseFire. He is also a member of the Rockford Ministries Fellowship. He is a graduate of Northern Illinois University. He is married and has one child.

    Favorite Bible verse: Acts 1:8, “You shall receive power after the Holy Ghost has come upon you.” It is important to me because I feel that we are all empowered by God.

    Who are your role models? Martin Luther King, because he paved the way for a lot of us to better ourselves. He taught you to empower yourself, believe in yourself and he believed in nonviolence. Another role model was Muhammad Ali, because of his confidence and the way he stood up for what he believed in. Of course, my father, who taught me the importance of being a family man, a leader in the community and a minister to others, is one my role models.

    Favorite movie: “Cooley High.”

    What instruments did you play? I’m a former bass player and trumpet player. One of my biggest influences was my high school band instructor. He taught me to find talent within myself to achieve.

    What is the last good book you read? “The Prayer of Jabez” by Bruce Wilkinson

    What is your ideal way to spend a weekend in the Rock River Valley? A good solid church service of praises and songs from the best local talent around town. I would just like to be part of a really solid moving service that inspired people.

    Favorite poem: “Inviccus” by William Ernest Hemsley.

    Dream vacation: I would like to go to Egypt and see the tombs of the pharaohs.

    What is a goal that you have always wanted to accomplish? To become a role model that people could relate to and look up to.
