A mistrial was declared Wednesday in Los Angeles in the wrongful death case of Brooklyn rapper Notorious BIG. A judge ruled the family of the rapper, whose real name is Christopher Wallace, can still file a lawsuit to link his death to a Los Angeles Police Department corruption scandal. The judge made the ruling after charges were made that the LAPD deliberately withheld evidence from the rapper's family that pointed to two corrupt LAPD officers who may have been involved in Wallace’s death.
Wallace, also known as Biggie Smalls, was gunned down in 1997 while leaving a night club. He was 24 years old.
Wallace's family claims a rival record label, Death Row Records, orchestrated the murder in retaliation for the drive-by shooting death one of its own rappers, Tupac Shakur, months earlier.
No one has ever been charged in connection with Wallace’s murder.
